North Curry Produce Market

Date: Saturday, 6th January 2018

Room: Main Hall

Time: 9:30am till 11:30

Wow what a busy market we had in December. Peter was certainly kept busy churning out the bacon butties, 30 and all sold before 11am. Please be sure to come early so as not to be disappointed. We hated turning people away. The stall holders are keen to come because I'm sure your cupboards will be bare after the festivities. Mike will brave the weather and be in his usual pitch outside, so if you gardeners are beginning to plan your spring planting, please stop and see what he can offer, just a reminder he also supplies and delivers logs locally. Looking forward to seeing you.

'Twas Christmas Day in the Workhouse: a talk by Ken Atherton, FRGS, FBCartS

Ken Atherton will be returning to North Curry Society with a chilling account of conditions locally in Victorian and Edwardian times for those without sufficient means to support themselves. Workhouse - the word alone was calculated to send a shudder down the spine of any honest 19th century worker. It signified the end of the line, the final indignity: 'Abandon hope, all ye who enter here'. This presentation recounts the life endured by Workhouse inmates until the system was finally ended in the 1930s. The talk uses examples from the Workhouses of Bridgwater, Taunton, Wellington, and Williton.

It's that time when North Curry village hall is transported to pantomime land with this year's production of 'Babes in the Wood'.

With plenty of 'boo's' and 'he's behind you' it should be great family entertainment. All sorts of characters, from the evil Sheriff of Nottingham to the Dame, Nurse Molly Coddle, and the love interest between Maid Marion and Robin Hood. Lots of fun with the comedy duo of Block and Tackle, and all the Merry Men and villagers makes this a timeless classic of a show.
